Ethnographic Pottery Research

Earthenware Pottery Production in Bohol Today

Recent ethnographic research identified four towns in Bohol that still produce earthenware "market" pottery - the towns of Taliban, Calape, Alburquerque and Valencia (See Map). Most of this pottery is made using traditional methods, i.e, it is hand-made and open-air fired. Potters were interviewed in each of these villages, and data was collected on the types of pots they were making, their production methods, the economic factors that influenced their production choices, and various social aspects of pottery production, such as the transmission of knowledge, cultural taboos and gendered notions surrounding pottery production.
